Wenger aims for Champs League next year

Arsene Wenger remains confident Arsenal have what it takes to qualify for the Champions League again, which for him is the only place to be.

The Gunners are in the driving seat to reach the last eight of this season's elite European club competition following their superb 1-0 victory against Real Madrid in the Bernabeu on Tuesday night.

Wenger, though, knows the toughest challenge his young side face is improving their domestic form to ensure a strong finish to the campaign which would see them overhaul Tottenham and grab fourth spot in the Barclays Premiership.

The Arsenal boss said: "For me, Europe is Champions League.

"As for the rest, if you qualify directly for the UEFA Cup you will not turn it down, but at the moment our target is to qualify for the Champions League.

"I cannot say to the players `okay let's qualify for the UEFA Cup'.

"We are only five points behind Tottenham with a game in hand, and we play Tottenham at home.

"We have a good chance to still be in there. Why should we consider a catastrophic scenario?"

Wenger insisted: "I believe we are turning it around - and we are turning it around well enough and early enough to still get in the Champions League."

Should Arsenal lose at Blackburn tomorrow, Mark Hughes' men would climb above the fifth-placed Gunners and very much into UEFA Cup contention themselves.

Despite the possibility of missing out on place in Europe altogether next season, entering the Intertoto Cup as a last resort is not an option for the north-London side.

"We will not apply for the Intertoto," Wenger maintained.

"I have nine players at the World Cup, so I do not see how I can enter the Intertoto Cup and give some holiday to the players.

"It is better to start fresh and try to get up there again than starting the season with nobody available at all."

One of those Gunners heading to Germany in the summer could be Cesc Fabregas, who was today named in the full Spain squad for the first time ahead of next week's friendly against Ivory Coast.

The teenager was one of several youngsters who showed maturity beyond their years against Madrid, and Wenger believes it was just rewards for all their hard work through what has been a difficult season.

"It will give them a boost, of course, and we needed one," he reflected.

"They need one because they have always been surrounded by negative vibes for months now.

"No matter how good we play, there is not a good word about us and when you are 19 or 20 years old, that has certainly a weight in your mind and of course on that side it will give us a big lift - but the biggest lift will be consistency."
