Manchester City boss Stuart Pearce believes that Stephen Ireland's elevation into the Republic of Ireland senior squad can spur him on to even greater achievements at club level.

After spending three years in exile from international duty at youth level following a much-publicised dispute with former boss Brian Kerr, Ireland is now in line to win his first cap after being named in Steve Staunton's squad for next month's friendly with Sweden.

While the move caught many by surprise, it was no shock to Pearce, or the City coaching staff, who have seen Ireland emerge as one of the most improved players in the Blues squad this season.

The 19-year-old has already made an impressive 21 senior appearances in midfield for City. And Pearce is convinced this latest accolade will only be a benefit to Ireland's form at club level.

"You have to give Stephen a lot of credit," said Pearce. "He has pushed on a fair bit this season and getting involved in the Irish set-up is another feather in his cap.

"He has had a taste of first-team football with us and is just on the outskirts of the senior team. If I was in Stephen's position, I would be rolling my sleeves up to try and get into our side on a permanent basis.

"If he achieves that, he would become a permanent fixture in the Irish team as well, which would be a great boost."
