Bolton head to Marseille next week with their UEFA Cup hopes in the balance, following a goalless and bad tempered 0-0 first-leg draw at the Reebok Stadium.

The French side had five men booked, including former Manchester United keeper Fabien Barthez, as they threatened to lose their composure.

But, while Trotters chief Sam Allardyce could rightly point to a couple of plausible penalty appeals which were rejected, it was Jussi Jaaskelainen who made the best save of the night, flying out to rob danger-man Mamadou Niang, who had burst clean through.

Ferreira screwed a shot wide and then Jaaskelainen slid out to collect bravely at Niang's feet as Bolton once again lost possession close to their own area.

Soon, it was Barthez's turn to provide the heroics as he turned away a close range effort from Ricardo Vaz Te, who had been introduced for Borgetti barely a minute earlier.

Marseille cleared the corner but Barthez was unhappy about the challenges he was receiving and after being booked for racing 30 yards to protest, risked even greater punishment by prolonging his argument.

Ferreira became the fifth Marseille player booked, yet again for dissent after conceding a free-kick close to halfway.

Jaaskelainen saved low from Ribery, then Cesar appeared to jab an elbow in Stelios' face as he muscled the Greek forward away from the ball.

Bolton thought they had won it in stoppage time when Stelios got behind the Marseille defence and met Ricardo Gardner's angled cross with a firm header, only to bullet the chance into the side-netting.
