David Bentley struck a stunning hat-trick as Blackburn Rovers edged out 10-man Manchester United 4-3 in a thrilling Premiership encounter at Ewood Park.
Ruud van Nistelrooy came off the bench to claim two second-half goals as the visitors, who had Rio Ferdinand sent off in a stormy finish, staged a stirring comeback from 4-1 down.
But Rovers held on to strengthen their top six Premiership claims, while at the same time all but end second-placed United's slim hopes of catching runaway leaders Chelsea who now have a 15-point lead.
Bentley - who this week made permanent his loan switch from Arsenal - rounded off a memorable night with his third on 56 minutes, threading an angled drive past Edwin van der Sar after a neat Robbie Savage pass had found the forward unmarked 15 yards out.
There was still time for van Nistelrooy to set up a tense finish the Dutchman struck twice within 13 minutes of his introduction on 55 minutes.
The United striker's first arrived in the 64th minute when Ronaldo cut in sharply from the left and dragged the ball across goal where Van Nistelrooy was lurking to poke home for 4-2.
The second, still with 20 minutes remaining, came on the turn from a dozen yards after Wes Brown re-directed a Patrice Evra ball into the box.
United had chances to claim a point, but lost their momentum with the 88th-minute departure of Ferdinand.
The England international had already been cautioned for an 85th minute foul on Morten Gamst Pedersen, when he upended Savage with an over the top challenge that saw the Welsh midfielder carried off and referee Phil Dowd with no option but to brandish a second yellow card.
