Manchester United defender Gary Neville has been charged with improper conduct by the English FA.
Neville attracted widespread criticism for his wild celebrations following Rio Ferdinand's last-gasp winner against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Neville ran fully 60 yards to launch a taunting, badge-kissing reaction in front of the Liverpool fans, which could have provoked crowd trouble.
The FA have been swayed by the concerns of Greater Manchester Police, which have been expressed both to United and officials at Soho Square.
The 30-year-old has until February 10 to respond, although as the case is not on the FA's new fast-track disciplinary process, it appears he may escape with just a heavy fine.
Elsewhere, Cristiano Ronaldo has been charged with misconduct by UEFA.
The matter related to the midfielder's offensive gesture to supporters as he left the field during the Red Devils' disastrous Champions League defeat to Benfica in Lisbon last month.
After suffering the abuse of home fans throughout the game, Ronaldo then responded by raising one finger to the crowd as he was jeered following his substitution in the second half.
If the 20-year-old Portugal international is found guilty, he will almost certainly be forced to serve a suspension, although that will not take effect until next season as United's defeat in Lisbon saw them tumble out of all European competition before Christmas for the first time in a decade.
