Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp has expressed an interested in Middlebrough goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.

The Australian international shocked Boro by handing in a transfer request last week and was told by manager Steve McClaren he would be allowed to depart.

Pompey boss Harry Redknapp has not yet spoken to Boro but confirmed he would like to bring the 33-year-old to Fratton Park if the financial side of the deal suits his club.

The Portsmouth manager told www.skysports.com: "There is an interest there. I like him. He is a top keeper, no doubt about it and for sure we are certainly interested.

"Whether we could do a deal and afford him remains to be seen. But there is nothing concrete on that at the moment."

The arrival of new club co-owner Alexandre Gaydamak has injected funds into Portsmouth who are fighting to stay in the Premiership.

Already Benjani Mwaruwari has arrived from Auxerre in a club-record £4.1million deal, while Emmanuel Olisadebe has signed on a pay-as-you-play contract from Panathinaikos.

Dutchman Sander Westerveld is the current number one at Fratton Park, with Jamie Ashdown injured, but the 31-year-old has struggled to reproduce the form he demonstrated with Liverpool during his second spell in English football.
