Colombian striker killed in shooting

Colombian striker Elson Becerra has died after a shooting in a nightclub in Cartagena de Indias.

Becerra, who played his club football with UAE side Al Jazeera, was shot four times while dancing in the club. He was rushed to the Vargas Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Becerra was part of the Colombian squad that won the Copa America in 2001 and the Confederations Cup in France in 2003. He was also part of the squad that failed to reach this year's World Cup in Germany.

Colombian soccer has often been hit by the country's endemic violence, which is fed by a massive cocaine trade. In the most famous case, defender Andres Escobar was shot to death in 1994 shortly after returning from the World Cup in the United States.

Many fans had blamed Escobar for Colombia's elimination after he scored an own goal in a match against the host nation.
