New concerns emerged today over whether Wembley Stadium will be ready in time for this year's FA Cup final.

Conflicting reports have raised fears that a dispute between contractors and landowners may have put the construction of a walkway damagingly behind schedule.

The £757million Wembley project has long been geared to a March 31 deadline for the handover of the new completed stadium to the Football Association, in time to stage the final on May 13.

But contractors Multiplex and landowners Quintain Estates have given the Daily Mail variant accounts of whether a delay to the start of a 20-week period set aside to build the pedestrian access can be overcome.

A Multiplex spokesman said: "We've had meetings over how we can accelerate what is a 20-week job, but there's only so much we can do over a problem that was nothing to do with us. It's causing us major concern.

Quintain appear to be less worried, their representative reporting: "All issues have been resolved to ensure Multiplex have sufficient time to complete the works before March 31."

The original contract was for Multiplex to hand over on January 31 but that has already been rescheduled.

The FA have booked Cardiff's Millennium Stadium as a back-up venue for the May 13 final.
