Celtic manager Gordon Strachan has revealed captain Neil Lennon was consulted over the signing of Roy Keane.

The 34-year-old midfielder's place is said to be under most threat following the arrival of the former Manchester United star. But Strachan explained Lennon had a key role in the capture of the ex-Republic of Ireland international.

He said: “Any major decisions I make at training and in terms of picking teams I always speak to Neil Lennon. If I am going to change tactics then I will ask him what he thinks. Something major like this (the Keane signing), you have to speak to your captain. Roy knows Lenny is the captain.”

Keane spurned more lucrative offers to move to the club he supported growing up. But Strachan claims people are finding it difficult to cope with the fact the player is not their top earner.

He continued: “We have a financial plan for the next 18 months and it doesn't damage us in a big way whatsoever. People can't actually get their head around that people can actually come and play and not be the top earner of the club.

“I knew it was going to be a hell of a tester because I knew what other clubswere offering him. He's all right financially but I know millionaires who want to add more and more. He could have gone to other clubs that couldn't give him trophies. That's him.”
