Roy Keane's dream of finishing his career at Celtic looks set to be realised after the Glasgow club's major shareholder reportedly agreed to pay part of his salary, removing the biggest stumbling block to a move to Scotland.

BBC Scotland have reported that financier Dermot Desmond had agreed to come up with the funds to ensure that Keane moves to Parkhead.

Keane has repeatedly made it clear that Celtic, the club he supported while growing up in Cork, was his favoured destination.

But it had appeared in recent weeks that the two parties would be unable to do a deal on the 34-year-old's wages.

Real Madrid and a number of Premiership clubs had also expressed an interest in signing the midfielder.

Earlier this week, Real President Florentino Perez ruled out a move before January and Keane himself had said he would prefer not to play for another Premiership club.
