UEFA will decide next week whether to charge Cristiano Ronaldo over his `one-fingered' gesture to Benfica fans at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old allowed the frustration of a miserable evening to get the better of him when he was substituted midway through the second half and TV pictures showed him making the obscene gesture as he walked towards the dug-out.

The incident has been brought to UEFA's attention by Portuguese media. A spokesperson for UEFA said: "We will look at it next week and decide whether to take the matter further."

Ronaldo could end up facing a European suspension if he is found guilty of any offence, with the ban starting next season following United's unexpected exit from the Champions League.

But Ronaldo, who has endured a difficult few months with the death of his father being followed by rape allegations which were dropped, feels his reaction was justified given the abuse he received from the stands.

He said: "If the people were kinder, I would have reacted in a different manner. But the supporters were nasty to me."
