Thierry Henry missed a penalty for Arsenal tonight

Arsenal captain Thierry Henry's penalty miss cost the Gunners their perfect record in the Champions League this season when they drew 0-0 with Ajax at Highbury.

The France striker side-footed wide with the last kick of the first half after Jose Antonio Reyes was felled by Tomas Galasek on the edge of the penalty box.

Arsenal had won all five previous Champions League games however the result did not affect qualification for the knockout stages as the Premiership side had already won Group B and former Champions League winners Ajax were guaranteed second place.

Ajax applied the early pressure but had to change their plans when injured captain Zdenek Gygera had to be replaced by Hatem Trabelsi in defence.

Quincy should have scored from a Reyes corner in the 17th minute but got the ball stuck in his feet, wasting the chance.

Arsenal's discipline dipped as first Mathieu Flamini was cautioned, then Hleb for sliding through Hedwiges Maduro from behind after the ball had gone. The hobbling Netherlands midfielder was soon replaced by Nigel de Jong.

Ajax striker Nordin Boukhari blasted a shot well off target when given time and space to shoot by De Jong's cross on 34 minutes and Wesley Sneijder curled just over soon after.

Arsenal wasted three good chances in quick succession in the five minutes before the break when first Hleb turned to play in Henry in the box. He crossed for youngster Larsson but the Swede's strike was deflected.

Then goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg's weak parry of a Quincy shot fell straight to Reyes, who volleyed clean over the bar.

Reyes thought he had made amends when he won a penalty one the edge of the box. Galasek slid in for the offending tackle and protested vehemently with the Spaniard once he sprang to his feet.

With the last kick of the half, Henry missed the spot-kick, to the disbelief and delight of the visiting fans.

Stand-in Gunners goalkeeper Manuel Almunia was in action within minutes of the restart, pulling off a risky slide tackle on Markus Rosenberg in the box.

At point-blank range, he pulled off another superb stop with his feet in the 58th minute after Sneijder played Steven Pienaar clean through, though the offside flag was up.

Ajax right-back Johnny Heitinga was then booked for a foul which felled Reyes.

Cesc Fabregas replaced Hleb for the last half-hour and Netherlands striker Robin van Persie came on for the limping Reyes.

Arsenal had Almunia to thank when he pulled off a flying fingertip save from a fierce De Jong shot with just one minute to go.
