England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has given his backing for David Beckham to remain as England captain in next summer's World Cup despite the midfielder's latest sending-off.

Beckham was dismissed - his third red card this season - for a lunge on Riki in Real Madrid's 1-0 victory over Getafe.

But it was his reaction afterwards, returning from the tunnel to confront opposition coach Bernd Schuster, which caused more concern.

The midfielder's suitability to lead the side has been the subject of debate over the last few months - with Chelsea captain John Terry touted as a better option.

However, Eriksson defended his decision to stick with the man who has worn the armband throughout his reign as coach.

“We have many players who could be the captain in the team and that is very good. It is important they act as captain but Beckham will be the captain," said Eriksson.

“It doesn't matter if he wears an armband. Everyone wants to be captain but I can't see any reason why I should change.”

On Beckham's sending off the Swede said: “It is not the best of challenges. You could live without that challenge.”
