Arsenal have reached an agreement to sign Mexican striker Carlos Vela according to reports in the Central American country's media.

Vela, 16, helped Mexico's Under-17 team win the World Cup in that age group - a first for Mexican football.

Vela's father Enrique told the Mexican media that Arsenal had agreed to pay $3.5million for the youngster who will play for Spanish side Valencia until he is 18.

The 16-year-old Cancun-born striker has not made his professional debut with present club Guadalajara.

Enrique Vela said that the entire family except Carlos' brother Alejandro will move to Spain. "These chances appear only once in somebody's life," said Enrique Vela.

"I know Guadalajara wanted Carlos to stay, but fortunately everything went well and we have reached an amicable agreement with Guadalajara."

Vela won the golden boot by netting five goals in six matches in the under-17 World Cup in Peru.

Vela will follow in the footsteps of international striker Jared Borgetti, the first Mexican to play in English football, who joined Bolton earlier this year.
