Drogheda United held off a late rally from Bray Wanderers to win 2-1 and reach their first FAI Cup Final since 1976.

Paul Doolin's side made a flying start and within two minutes Bray keeper Chris O'Connor had tipped a Sami Ristila header over the bar and captain Declan O'Brien had fired wide.

However, the visitors wasted a clear chance in the 17th minute when Kieran O'Brien headed David Tyrell's corner over the bar from six yards.

Drogheda soon regained the ascendancy as two Declan O'Brien efforts were deflected wide and Gavin Whelan fired just past the post.

They made their superiority count when Shane Robinson was fouled on the edge of the box by Philip Keogh.

Simon Webb's kick was blocked in the crowded goalmouth, but O'Brien was on hand to fire the rebound past O'Connor.

However, Drogheda had a lucky escape in first-half injury time when centre-back Brian McGovern volleyed over from six yards following superb wing play by Tyrell.

The second half was scrappy by comparison, with Bray going closest early on as McGovern narrowly failed to get his head to a Tyrell free kick, and Colm Tresson's shot was held by Drogheda keeper Dan Connor.

Drogheda didn't threaten the Bray goal until the 77th minute when O'Connor clutched Whelan's looping effort, but the home side had one foot firmly in the final soon after when Jermaine Sandvliet drove the ball to the net from 15 yards.

Two minutes later Bray were back in it when a defensive clearance fell to Tresson in the box, and the former Drogheda player fired past Connor from 15 yards.

Drogheda had a couple of scares in the final moments, but they held on to set up a mouth-watering clash with Cork City at Tolka Park on December 4.
