Tottenham took over second place in the Premiership from Wigan after a 2-0 win over hapless Everton at White Hart Lane.

Goals from Mido and Jermaine Jenas sealed a seventh defeat in eight games for the visitors who remain rooted to the foot of the table.

The Toffees also equalled their longest run without a league goal, matching the six goalless games they managed in 1950-51.

Ominously, Everton were relegated at the end of that season, finishing bottom, and currently they look unlikely to move off the foot of the table.

Tottenham continued their good start to the season, winning for the fifth time in their first nine games and moving onto 18 points with only London rivals Chelsea ahead of them.

The visitors reached the mid point on level terms and at that time they looked comfortable.

Everton even had the best chance of the first half as Nuno Valente sent over a free kick from the left after a foul by Paul Stalteri on James McFadden.

The ball fell to Kevin Kilbane who shot right footed from 12 yards but Jenas cleared the ball off the line.

But after the break, the match quickly turned in Tottenham's favour.

On 55 minutes, Jermain Defoe lashed in a left-footed shot that was parried by Nigel Martyn but two minutes later the hosts were ahead.

Jenas sent over a delectable right wing cross and Mido stole in to head home at the near post.

Five minutes later, the provider turned goal-scorer as Jenas met a cross from Defoe to head home from six yards out.

Everton boss David Moyes responded by throwing on forwards Duncan Ferguson and James Beattie in a desperate search for a goal.

Everton laid siege to the Spurs goal but the home side's young defence remained resilient to the end.
