James Beattie has vowed to prove he can handle the responsibility of being Everton's record signing.

The 27-year-old could find himself plunged back into Everton's desperate fight for European survival despite only returning to full training this week after a lengthy spell out with a toe injury.

It has been a frustrating time for Beattie and the club as he has struggled for fitness and to justify boss David Moyes' faith in him since he moved from Southampton in the January transfer window.

But, with Everton needing four goals to at least stay in the UEFA Cup tie when they face Dinamo Bucharest at Goodison Park on Thursday, Beattie may well be rushed back into action.

He has had a bitterly frustrating time since his move to Merseyside for £6million last January and he accepts that he has to prove his worth to the club.

He told Evertonfc.com: "I have not been able to show anybody that I can handle the responsibility of scoring goals. When I come back this time I want to have a run of games and start scoring and showing everybody what I can do.

"The gaffer brought me in to score goals and I have always said that is what I can do. One goal, or two or three could set it off and hopefully we can progress from there and not undo what we did last year."
