Arsene Wenger revealed he may ask Dennis Bergkamp to travel to Amsterdam for Arsenal's next Champions League match after the Dutchman came off the bench to fire an injury-time winner against Thun at Highbury last night, where Robin van Persie had been sent off.

The young forward was shown a straight red card for jumping into a challenge with Alen Orman at the end of the first half, leading with his foot high and studs showing, and is now set to serve a three-game European ban.

With Thierry Henry already absent because of a groin injury and the Gunners failing to fire on all cylinders in his absence, a suspension for Van Persie was the last thing the Arsenal manager needed.

“Dennis did very well and it was a goal full of class, fight and determination. For me that combination enables him to be a big striker,” said the Arsenal manager of the 36-year-old, who has a well-documented fear of flying.

“When you make a player travel as far as that, you have to be sure at the start that you will play him because seven hours' travel is sometimes tricky if you want to make changes to your plans at the last second.”
