Roy Keane may have played his last game for the Republic of Ireland.

The Manchester United captain has been ruled out for at least two weeks with a hamstring injury, a recurrence of the injury which had originally kept him out of United's pre-season tour to the Far East.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson had hoped his influential captain would be available for Sunday's key Barclays Premiership encounter with Liverpool at Anfield.

It also means the Corkman will miss the Premiership home game with Blackburn on September 24 and the following week's European encounter with Benfica.

Keane may also miss Ireland's make-or-break World Cup qualifier with Switzerland in the middle of next month.

And should Ireland not gain World Cup qualification or a playoff place, then last week’s defeat to France may have been the last time Keane will have donned the green jersey as he is likely to retire from the international set-up after this World Cup.
