Benni banned for bad hair day

FC Porto's star striker Benni McCarthy has been dropped from the club's Champions League match against Scottish giants Rangers on Tuesday for breaking club rules.

Coach Co Adriaanse, who has barred players from wearing earrings or "unusual" hairstyles, ordered the South African to sit out the team's match on Saturday against Rio Ave at the last minute, reportedly because he appeared at a training camp wearing new hair extensions.

After the match, which Porto won 3-0, the Dutchman told reporters he was not sure if he would include the 27-year-old player in the club's line-up for the Champions league match in Glasgow.

"This team has rules which apply to all its professionals. Even the best and the most expensive players have to respect them," he told sports daily A Bola.

But when the former European champions divulged their 19-man squad for the match on Sunday, McCarthy's name was not on the list.

McCarthy, Porto's top scorer for the past two seasons, has expressed his unhappiness that the club will not allow him to transfer to England.

Adriaanse took over at Porto in June. He is the fifth coach since the club won the Champions League in 2004 under Jose Mourinho.

Porto included their new 22-year-old signing, Slovakia international defender Marek Cech, who joined the club last month from Sparta Prague.

Porto and Rangers are in UEFA Champions League Group H along with Inter Milan and Artmedia Bratislava.
