Sunderland slumped to their 19th successive Premiership loss with a 1-0 defeat at Wigan as Jason Roberts became Wigan's ton-up king after referee Steve Bennett awarded the Latics a penalty.
A Championship match that masqueraded as a top-flight encounter was settled inside the opening minute when Roberts stepped up to score Wigan's first Premiership goal from the spot.
The goal was Roberts' 100th league strike, condemning Sunderland to a fourth straight loss on their return to big-time football, to add to the 15 they suffered at the end of the 2002-03 campaign.
