Jonathan Woodgate made his long-awaited Real Madrid debut as his side defeated a Major League Soccer Select XI 5-0 in the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.

Woodgate took another step towards a full recovery after 16 months out with a muscle problem when he entered the game as an 85th minute substitute.

He had played 45 minutes against the juniors last Friday and that was enough to convince coach Wanderley Luxemburgo the former Newcastle and Leeds defender was ready to make his first public appearance in a Real shirt.

Although he only touched the ball on three occasions there can be no denying both his and the crowd's pleasure when he stepped onto the pitch with just five minutes remaining.

His club have also arranged a practice game tonight for Woodgate to continue building up his confidence.

Meanwhile, a David Beckham free-kick and two trademark goals from Ronaldo set Real Madrid on the way to a comfortable win.
