Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell has branded suggestions that manager Gordon Strachan is under pressure as ludicrous.

The new Hoops' boss has seen his team concede nine goals in his first two competitive matches, including the 5-0 Champions League drubbing by Artmedia Bratislava on Wednesday.

Celtic opened up their Bank of Scotland Premier League campaign with a 4-4 draw at Motherwell on Saturday, after throwing away a 3-1 lead at half-time. But the Parkhead chief executive and the board are convinced the right man is in place to succeed Martin O'Neill.

Lawwell told the Sunday Mail: "The board are right behind Gordon. He needs time and will be given time to get it right. It is ludicrous for anyone to suggest he is under pressure.  Gordon has only been working with the players for four weeks and we have played two competitive games.

"He has a tough job because he is following in Martin O'Neill's footsteps. Martin brought fantastic success to this club and is viewed as a legend. Now Gordon is the manager and has our full backing. It is a measure of the man that he had it in him to follow Martin. Other people would not have taken on that task."

Strachan is also in the process of re-building the Celtic squad with the arrivals of Artur Boruc, Mo Camara, Maciej Zurawski, Paul Telfer, Adam Virgo and Jeremie Aliadiere preceding the capture of Japan international Shunsuke Nakamura.

Lawwell added: "Gordon has a huge rebuilding job on his hands. We never expected things to click into place overnight because we knew there would be many changes to the squad. We remain confident Gordon will get it right in the seasons ahead. I have no doubts he will become a successful Celtic boss. We wouldn't have asked him to take over if we didn't think that."
