Derry scrape through in thrilling shoot-out

Derry City booked their place in the semi-final of the League Cup last night following a dramatic penalty shoot-out to defeat Drogheda United.

United took the lead in the 87th minute with a blistering twenty yards left foot shot from Jermaine Sandvliet.

However Derry's reply was immediate and Gary Beckett equalised after he had been put through by Brian Cash.

The home side then surged into the lead in the third minute of extra time when top scorer Mark Farren fired the ball into the net from twelve yards.

But Drogheda were awarded a penalty in the ninety-sixth minute when Ciaran Martyn handled the ball inside the City penalty area and Damien Lynch retained his composure to equalised for the Drogs.

In a nail biting penalty shoot out the teams each scored with four of their regulation five penalty kicks before, in a sudden death situation Barry Molloy netted for Derry after Damien Lynch had missed.
