The Republic of Ireland Under-18s went down 4-2 to hosts Italy in their opening European Olympic Group match in Lignano last night. Ireland troubled their full-time opponents throughout and goals from Crumlin United pair Adam Rooney and Adam Power ensured the hosts had to fight hard for their victory.

Rooney's goal was a superb 30-yard drive while Power made no mistake with a late penalty.

Noel O'Reilly's side will be hoping to bounce back from their Italian setback when they face Finland in their final group match today.

Starting XI: Ferry (Derry), McArdle (Shels), Power (Crumlin), Dennehy (Kerry), O'Shea (Tramore), Connellan (Athlone), O'Sullivan (Belv), Byrne (Crumlin), Downes (Tolka), Judge ((St Joseph's), Rooney (Crumlin).
