Things are simply going from bad to worse for Shamrock Rovers after a 2-1 defeat to Longford Town.
Longford were the better team in the opening period, the best of their first half chances fell to Andy Myler. The inform striker was denied first by the crossbar, and subsequently by a brilliant save from Hoops netminder Barry Murphy.
Rovers were a different proposition in the second half and went in front just 3 minutes after the restart. Trevor Molloy floated in an inch perfect cross, which was headed home by Gavin McDonnell.
Longford huffed and puffed in search of an equaliser and were rewarded for their endeavour in the 73rd minute when defender Stephen Paisley answered the Longford call, firing home a leveller that was aided by a wicked deflection en route to goal.
The home side were in front just 5 minutes later. Alan Cawley’s free kick broke kindly for Sean Dillon and the centre half cracked home a superb winning goal despite the best efforts of Barry Murphy.
