Arsenal footballer Robin van Persie will be held in custody tonight following his arrest in Rotterdam after an allegation of rape was made.

Van Persie, who has at present not been charged with any offence, will see a judge tomorrow when a decision could be made on whether to lay charges or possibly to free the Dutch international.

It will be a second night in the cells for Van Persie who was arrested on Monday evening.

Reports in Holland say the alleged incident took place on Saturday night and the alleged victim complained to police over the weekend.

The 21-year-old can be held for a maximum of three days without charge and a spokeswoman for the public prosecutor earlier explained: "He is suspected of rape and our system is different to England."

Arsenal have so far refused to comment on the alleged incident.

Van Persie was brought to Highbury for £2.75million for the start of last season, billed as the next Dennis Bergkamp.

The youngster was not a regular in the first team, although he impressed in his 14 starting appearances under manager Arsene Wenger.

He scored 10 goals in all competitions for the Gunners in his first season at the club, although there were questions raised about his temperament.
