Burley quits as Rams boss

George Burley today resigned as Derby manager after claiming his position had become untenable.

Burley's relationship with the club's hierarchy and director of football Murdo Mackay had proved difficult with chairman John Sleightholme opting to sell Tom Huddlestone to Tottenham against the manager's wishes earlier this year.

And the club last month publicly denied they had launched an internal inquiry into Burley's conduct following newspaper allegations which the 49-year-old Scot, who led the Rams to the play-offs this season, said had hurt him deeply.

Meanwhile, in other news from the Coca-Cola Championship, Wolves captain Paul Ince has signed a new one-year contract at the club.

The 37-year-old former Manchester United and Liverpool midfielder helped Wanderers win promotion in 2003 in his first season at Molineux and now current boss Glenn Hoddle hopes his one-time England skipper can repeat the feat.

Ince had considered retirement after leaving Middlesbrough two years ago but will now continue his playing career past his 38th birthday in October.
