Valencia have agreed to sign former Newcastle striker Patrick Kluivert in a bid to return to the top of Spanish football.

The 2004 Primera Liga champions, who fell apart last season and finished seventh following coach Rafael Benitez's departure to Liverpool, have reached agreement on a three-year deal with the Dutchman.

The 28-year-old, who will arrive on a free transfer, is due to undergo a medical at Valencia next Thursday.

Kluivert joined Newcastle on a three-year deal after being released by Barcelona at the end of the 2003-04 season.

He failed to live up to expectations, however, starting 25 games in all competitions and scoring 13 goals.

Valencia appointed Quique Sanchez Flores as coach this week and have also signed Brazilian midfielder Edu from Arsenal.
