Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy today completed his first summer signing when £100,000 Irish striker Daryl Murphy arrived at the Stadium of Light.

The 22-year-old Waterford United frontman has signed a two-year contract after passing a medical and will go into the squad alongside former Republic of Ireland Under-21 team-mate Elliott for next season's Barclays Premiership campaign.

Elliott, Murphy, Kevin Kyle and Chris Brown are the strikers remaining at Sunderland following the departures of Marcus Stewart, Michael Bridges and Brian Deane.

Murphy is unlikely to be the last addition to manager Mick McCarthy's strike-force.

"We have known about Daryl for a while," said McCarthy. "He has played for the Under-21s and has played with Sleeves (Elliott).

"He is a targetman, a big, powerful striker and I am looking forward to seeing him here. We believe he has a bright future and I am delighted we have been able to bring him to Sunderland."

Murphy scored 21 goals in the eircom League Premier Division last season, and had spells with Southend and Luton before returning to hometown club in 2002.

"I am absolutely delighted to come to a club as big as Sunderland,"  he said.

"There is a fantastic fan-base here, they love their football and to play in front of such a passionate crowd will be fantastic.

"As soon as I saw the facilities - the Stadium of Light and the training ground - I wanted to come here. It will be a new start for me and my family and I am really looking forward to the challenge."

The Murphy signing represents McCarthy's first breakthrough since the end of last season, but he is pursuing a series of other targets and will hope more will follow within days.

Ipswich keeper Kelvin Davis is in talks with the club after Sunderland had a £750,000 bid accepted, while they are due to talk to Blackburn striker Jon Stead over a £1.8million move.

Davis' Portman Road team-mate Tommy Miller has promised the Wearsiders an answer when he returns from his honeymoon at the end of the month, although Leeds are also interested in the midfielder.

McCarthy and chairman Bob Murray must decide whether to increase their offers for Wolves' Kenny Miller and Watford's Heidar Helguson after having their initial bids rebuffed.
