Liverpool qualified for the Champions League final following a 1-0 win over Chelsea at Anfield in their semi-final second leg match. The first leg ended 0-0.
Liverpool scored the game's decisive goal in controversial fashion when Luis Garcia toe-poked home from close range in the fourth minute.
However, replays were inconclusive as to whether the whole of the ball had crossed the whole of the line, the requirement for a goal to be given, before it was hacked clear.
Despite six minutes of stoppage time, Chelsea could not find the away goal that would have taken them through although Eidur Gudjohnsen came desperately close with a fierce strike just past the far post.
Liverpool, who lost to Chelsea in the League Cup final earlier this season, will now face the winners of tomorrow's second semi-final between PSV Eindhoven and AC Milan in the May 25 final in Istanbul.
Chelsea were going for a trophy treble after wrapping up the English Premiership title last weekend.
And they were also trying to help manager Jose Mourinho, in his first season in England, win the Champions League in successive campaigns with two different clubs after the Portuguese guided Porto to the title last year.
But now it is Liverpool, four-times winners of the European Cup and whose last appearance in the final was 20 years ago, where their defeat against Juventus was overshadowed by the Heysel Stadium disaster which claimed the lives of 39 Italian fans, who will now have the chance to win the continent's major club football prize.
