Newcastle captain Alan Shearer is to postpone his retirement and play on for another season.
The former England striker was due to end his 17-year professional career in May after constantly insisting over the last few months that he had no intention to carry on playing.
However, the Magpies' talismanic striker is just nine goals short of legendary
Jackie Milburn's club-record and there has been speculation from
some quarters he would carry on.
Newcastle manager Graeme Souness has made a point of trying to get Shearer to change his mind since he took over at St James' Park from Sir Bobby Robson in September.
Souness redoubled his efforts after the now infamous public row with Craig Bellamy, which saw the Wales forward offloaded to Celtic on loan in January, and with increasing doubts about the value of Patrick Kluivert to the team.
