Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has told Steven Gerrard he is wrong to think the Champions League is beyond the club this season.

England midfielder and Liverpool captain Gerrard wrote off his side's chances before Tuesday's 3-1 first-leg home win over Bayer Leverkusen in the last 16.

But Benitez told The Sun: "I spoke with Steven and said to him, in future it is better to think we can win the Champions League.

"Why not? We need winners here and everyone thinking only of winning. I always want to win.

"When we lose, I only think about solutions. If you only think about winning the next game, you don't know what the draw will be.

"If we can win the next game, maybe we will draw a side that isn't so strong, or a side with injuries or suspensions."

Gerrard missed the win over the Germans due to a suspension.

Before Tuesday's match he said: "Let's be realistic, there are some fantastic teams left in the Champions League and we are just going to try to stay in as long as possible but we realise that maybe it is not our year this year."
