Liverpool captain Steve Gerrard has written off his side's chances of winning the Champions League this season.

Gerrard, who is suspended for tonight's first leg at home to Bayer Leverkusen in the last 16, said victory in Europe's premier club competition was unrealistic.

"It is going to be really tough," he said.

"Let's be realistic, there are some fantastic teams left in the Champions League and we are just going to try to stay in as long as possible but we realise that maybe it's not our year this year."

However, the England midfielder, who is still being linked with a big money move away from Anfield in the summer, said there was still plenty to play for both at home - in the Premiership and Sunday's Carling Cup final - and abroad.

"It's big couple of months for Liverpool," he added.

"We're fighting for the fourth spot for the Champions League for next season but we are still involved in two cup competitions which are very important and we are confident we can upset Chelsea on the 27th and get to the last eight of the Champions League, because financially it is big for the club and personally
for myself it is very good."
