Injured Manchester United striker Alan Smith is using Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the inspiration to get over his current ankle problem.

The former Leeds forward damaged ligaments when he landed awkwardly during his brief appearance in the Carling Cup semi-final at Chelsea three weeks ago.

Initially, Smith was expected to be sidelined for only a matter of days – but having pushed himself to get fit in time for the second leg of the Chelsea tussle, the 24-year-old set himself back.

He is nonetheless refusing to get downcast and believes the presence of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - who has been ruled out for the season following a major knee operation - in the United physio room is the perfect antidote to any feelings of depression.

“Ole's example should give everyone a lift,” said Smith.

“He is going to be out for such a long time but he still comes in every morning with his spirits high and puts in a tremendous amount of work.”
