Goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar tonight pledged his future to Fulham after joining Luis Boa Morte in agreeing a new contract at the club.

Van der Sar ended weeks of speculation over his future in agreeing a one-year contract extension, taking him up to the summer of 2006.

The 34-year-old Dutchman, whose existing deal was due to run out at the end of this season, could have moved on a Bosman free transfer this summer and Spanish side Levante were interested in signing him.

But Fulham revealed that van der Sar had agreed to stay at Craven Cottage, just a couple of weeks after Boa Morte extended his contract to 2008 amid speculation over a possible move to Newcastle.

Van der Sar told the club's website, www.fulhamfc.co.uk: "We have had an unsettled start to the season.

"But with players returning from injury and key players like Luis pledging their future to the team, the prospects are positive for Fulham and I am happy to be part of that.

"I have enjoyed my time at Fulham since I joined in 2001 and my family are happy and settled here.

"It is important that I play at the highest level to maintain my national team ambition and I know that the chairman and the manager have high aspirations for the club.

Fulham's boss Chris Coleman added: "Ed is a very influential player for us both on and off the pitch and has proved himself as a real leader when taking the captain's armband.

"During the transfer window the media speculated that our best players were expected to leave, but we have managed secure deals with two key players and that shows the commitment of the chairman and the board to the future potential of this club."
