Paolo Vanoli has severed his links with Rangers after returning to his homeland to join Serie B side Vicenza.

The 32-year-old Italian defender signed a two-and-a-half-year deal after becoming frustrated at Ibrox.

The Italian has found his first-team chances - featuring only eight times for Alex McLeish this season - limited following the arrival of on-loan Frenchman Gregory Vignal.

The former Fiorentina defender put in a transfer request despite still having six months to run on his contract.

After making the switch to Ibrox in the summer of 2003 from Parma, where he won the UEFA Cup in 1999, Vanoli enjoyed his tussle with Michael Ball for the left-back position and was an integral part of the squad, turning out in 35 matches for McLeish.

The Glasgow club have reduced their wage bill in preparation for more January signings - including former captain Barry Ferguson, who today handed in a transfer request at Blackburn after becoming homesick.

The club are also tracking Greece defender Sotiris Kyrgiakos and Liverpool's Stephane Henchoz and have been linked with Bolton's former Spain international Fernando Hierro.
