Bolton striker El-Hadji Diouf has been cleared of spitting at Birmingham fans by his club, who insist that there the player has no case to answer and they now consider the case closed.

Diouf was in fine form for Bolton, scoring his side's opening goal and proving to be a constant threat up front as he replaced hamstring victim Kevin Davies.

However the on-loan Liverpool player then found himself the subject of complaints from Birmingham supporters over an alleged spitting incident when celebrating his goal and statements were taken from them by stewards at half-time.

A Birmingham official informed match referee Uriah Rennie of events after Diouf's 17th-minute strike during the half-time interval, but both clubs have agreed to drop the matter.

A statement on the official Bolton website, wwwbwfc.co.uk said: "Bolton Wanderers Football Club has been in contact with Birmingham City today regarding the alleged spitting incident involving El-Hadji Diouf."

"Birmingham city have confirmed they have received no complaints and the stadium's CCTV system has no evidence of the allegation. Both clubs will not be taking further action and the matter is now closed."

Diouf has been involved in two previous spitting incidents and has been playing for his Premiership future while on loan from Liverpool.
