Paul Gascoigne is hoping to revive his football career by taking up a top coaching job in Australia.

Gascoigne is one of four English candidates reported to have applied for the job of coach at the Newcastle Jets, although Terry Venables is still the club's first choice as they prepare to compete in the newly-formed A-League.

Former England star Gascoigne resigned as player-coach of League Two side Boston United in October but has professed his desire to pursue a career in coaching.

The other applicants reported to have applied for the Jets post are former Tottenham boss David Pleat, former England captain David Platt and Ian Porterfield, the ex-Chelsea and Sheffield United manager.
