Liverpool legend Ronnie Whelan has acclaimed Fernando Morientes as the ideal transfer window signing and former captain Whelan cannot wait to see the 28-year old in a red shirt.
Earlier, Real Madrid striker Morientes revealed he will go to Liverpool. The 28-year-old has been out of favour at the Bernabeu and spent last season at French club Monaco.
Whelan said: "Morientes scores plenty of goals at the very top level. He is good in the air and good on the ground and he brings players into the game. He is everything a good centre-forward coming to Anfield should be and what is needed."
Despite returning to the Bernabeu this season, the Spain international is down the pecking order behind Ronaldo, Raul and former Liverpool striker Michael Owen.
Reds boss Rafael Benitez is desperate to bolster his attack after summer signing Djibril Cisse broke a leg earlier this season.
"Yes, I am going to England - I have decided", Morientes said in comments reported on Liverpool's official website, www.liverpoolfc.tv
"I will go to Liverpool and for many reasons. The main reason is the coach Rafa Benitez. He is Spanish and knows me perfectly, which is worth a lot for a professional."
