Spanish manager to face racism inquiry

Thierry Henry: Victim of Aragones' racist remarks
Thierry Henry: Victim of Aragones' racist remarks

The Spanish Football Association have opened a disciplinary file against national coach Luis Aragones following the recommendations of Spain's Anti-Violence Commission.

The action comes as a result of Aragones’ racist remarks that he made about Arsenal striker Thierry Henry, which were captured on camera.

He was asked to explain his actions before Spain's friendly against England last month, but responded with a tirade about England's colonial past.

Aragones is not surprised the Spanish FA have decided to act.

“I was expecting it, because the president told me it was going to happen. In a case like this everyone has the right to defend themselves”, he said.

If found guilty, Aragones could be fined up to 30,000 Euro and have his coaching licence suspended.

The issue of racism in Spanish football escalated when fans booed and directed monkey noises towards several of England's black players during the friendly on November 17.

And recently, there have been a number of cases of racist behaviour including Roberto Carlos who was the target of monkey chants in the game against Barcelona at the Nou Camp, while Barcelona’s Samuel Eto'o was subjected to similar treatment at Getafe.
