The FAI Council will meet today where they are expected to appoint their treasurer, John Delaney, as the association's interim Chief Executive.
However, this would be against Government wishes, who are anxious for the FAI to fill the post by public competition, as soon as possible.
Delaney's appointment could cause further strain between the FAI and the Government and put funding, earmarked for the FAI, in doubt.
Minister for Sport, John O'Donoghue is believed to want the FAI to advertise the post externally before the end of the year and the FAI and government appear to be on a collision course.
A meeting between the FAI and Irish Sports Council is scheduled for next week where the FAI will seek to repair strained links, however should Delaney be appointed today, that may be a bigger task than originally expected.
