Postma calls time on Villa career

Aston Villa keeper Stefan Postma is to hand in a transfer request because of his frustration at a lack of first-team football.

The 28-year-old made clear his intentions to Villa manager David O'Leary in a meeting on Monday and was reported to follow that up with a written request to leave the midlands club.

The Dutch player has made only one first-team appearance this season when he impressed in the 3-1 defeat at Arsenal but was instantly back on the substitutes bench after Thomas Sorensen recovered from a back problem.

Postma, who had signed a new two-year contract in the summer, said: "I love Villa but I think the time for me has come for me to play at first-team level."

Postma made five Premiership starts in his first season at Villa Park when he was vying for a place with Peter Enckelman.

The arrival of Sorensen from Sunderland in the summer of 2003 saw him starved of first-team action and last season he was confined to two substitute's appearances.
