Cup specialists Longford Town pulled a second FAI Cup win out of the fire as they beat Waterford United 2-0 thanks to goals from Alan Kirby and Paul Keegan after United seemed to have done enough to secure victory in Lansdowne Road.
Willie Bruton’s fantastic second-half goal had shocked the holders when Daryl Murphy helped on John Frost’s pass for Bruton to drill his shot into the top left hand corner of the Longford net, much to the delight of the Waterford fans.
However Longford, sporting a mysterious ‘L’ symbol on the numbers of their jerseys, were not about to give up their title without a fight and it fell to Man of the Match Eric Lavine to work hard up front and set up the goals for Kirby and Keegan.
