Manchester City 1 Chelsea 0
Jose Mourinho tasted defeat as Chelsea boss for the first time as Nicolas Anelka's ninth-minute penalty proved decisive in a frantic encounter with Manchester City at Eastlands.
The visitors could plausibly claim Paulo Ferreira's foul on the City striker was just outside the area, but equally, the full-back was fortunate to stay on the field as referee Howard Webb opted to hand out only a yellow card.
Anelka kept his cool to ram home his sixth goal of the campaign and with Eidur Gudjohnsen failing to convert a gilt-edged chance late on, Chelsea now found themselves five points adrift of odds-on title favourites Arsenal.
