SFA hold fire on Vogts decision

The Scottish Football Association will make no decision on the future of beleaguered Scotland manager Berti Vogts until president John McBeth returns to Hampden Park.

Speculation is rife over the future of the national team boss after the 1-1 draw against Moldova on Wednesday, with an emergency board meeting reportedly set to convene on Monday.

McBeth, the former Clyde chairman, was away on other business today thus preventing any possible decision being made today.

Vogts' position has become the subject of concern after a string of disappointing results, with the result in Chisinau - against a team ranked 113th in the world - the last straw as far as many of the 1,800 travelling Tartan Army members were concerned.

The former World Cup winner was not at his desk today as he was on a day off.

Sacking Vogts would require a substantial compensation package.

His contract runs until the 2006 World Cup finals - coincidentally in Germany - and fellow countryman Rainer Bonhof, the Under-21 coach, is also contracted for the next two years.

There have been no calls for Bonhof to leave but his current side have not won in almost a year, so he would be likely to depart with Vogts.

Gordon Strachan and Walter Smith have already been touted as ideal replacements for Vogts and both are currently out of work.
