Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane has been charged with assault and criminal damage, police said today.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "Roy Keane has this afternoon been charged with a section 4 public order criminal damage and a section 39 assault relating to an incident that occurred in the Hale area on September 4, 2004. He will appear before Trafford Magistrates on Thursday September 23, 2004."
The 33-year-old Manchester United and Irish legend is alleged to have clashed with a 16-year-old boy near his £1.4 million home on Saturday, September 4. Keane was reportedly walking his Labrador dog when he got into a row with the youngster before coming to blows close to Hale Golf Course.
Today the Irish international went to Stretford Police Station, a couple of miles from Old Trafford, with his solicitor and was charged with the offences. Keane played in last night's victory over Liverpool in the Premier League at Old Trafford.
