John O' Shea will not travel with the Irish squad to Switzerland for their World Cup qualifier clash on Wednesday night.
Following a training session today, Republic of Ireland Manager, Brian Kerr, said: "John O' Shea had a scan today which revealed a small tear on his lower thigh muscle, just above the knee. As there is too little time for him to recover before Wednesday's game he will not travel to Switzerland with the squad."
He added that "Damien Duff is also doubtful after receiving a kick on a calf muscle during yesterday's game and he is receiving treatment. He will not train for the next couple of days."
Other doubts for Ireland include Graham Kavanagh who has a slight twist to his ankle and is also receiving treatment and Stephen Carr.
Although Carr is expected to be fit and well for Wednesday's game after a slight stomach problem.
Roy Keane was a surprise addition to the squad last night. It was believed Keane would miss both of Ireland's opening qualifiers after fracturing two ribs. However, he has apparently made sufficient progress now to face the Swiss.
Kerr expalined: "When Roy withdrew from the squad almost immediately on its announcement, we had discussions with him and Manchester United about the possibility he could return from his rib injury in time for the second match of our programme.
"It was agreed to keep the matter under review but make no public comment.
"Earlier this week, Roy began light training with his club and has made considerable progress and so will now report to the Irish squad in preparation for the match in Basle.
"We expect him to be available for selection on Wednesday.
"I would like to thank Manchester United and manager Sir Alex Ferguson for their cooperation on the matter."
