Brian Kerr's midfield is seriously depleted

Liam Miller has become latest player to be ruled out of the Republic of Ireland squad ahead of their opening world cup qualifier with Cyrpus on Saturday.

The Manchester United midfielder has returned to Old Trafford for treatment on a calf injury and he joins Roy Keane, Matt Holland and David Connolly on the injured list.

As a result, Kerr has called Coventry City star Graham Barrett into the squad for the clashes against Cyprus and Switzerland.

However, there was good news elsewhere after Gary Breen, Alan Quinn and Paddy Kenny all joined the squad having come through last night's games.

Ireland play Cyprus on September 4 and then Switzerland in Basel on September 8.
