Irish and Swiss squads depleted

Roy Keane: his absence is a big blow to Brian Kerr's plans
Roy Keane: his absence is a big blow to Brian Kerr's plans

Republic of Ireland manager Brian Kerr believes that it is unlikely that either Roy Keane or Matt Holland will be available for Ireland's opening World Cup qualification games.

"It is unlikely that either Matt Holland or Roy Keane will be fit as they did not feature for their clubs," said Kerr.

Manchester United skipper Keane is suffering from a rib injury while Holland injured his ankle in a match for Charlton.

Robbie Keane and Clinton Morrison, though, who had been injury doubts, have both returned to action for their respective clubs, Spurs and Birmingham, and should be available.

Swiss manager Kobi Kuhn has named his squad for their games against Ireland and the Faroe Islands.  Stephane Chapuisat, Fabio Celestini and Jorg Stiel, who were all part of the squad that pipped Ireland to qualification for Euro 2004, have all retired from international football.  Alexander Frei, meanwhile, is suspended.

Ireland play Cyprus on September 4 and then Switzerland in Basel on September 8.

Switzerland squad for games against Faroe Islands on Saturday, September 4 and Wednesday, September 8.
